Anthracite coal from the US for Ukraine - how appropriate is this

During the visit to the United States, the Presidents of Ukraine and the United States discussed the possibility of supplying coal and liquefied natural gas to our country. In particular, Petro Poroshenko predicts that Ukraine will receive 2 million tons of American coal. Is it attractive for us to bring it from there? Mykhailo Gonchar, the president of the Centre for Global Studies "Strategy XXI", discusses this issue for the Express newspaper.

- Supply of American coal to Ukraine was carried out earlier, - explains Mykhailo Gonchar, - but in a little amount. This was the result of the agreements of 2014, when a delegation from the US Department of Energy visited Ukraine. At that time, in response to a request from the Ukrainian side for supplies, a readiness to supply coal from this country was expressed.

- Would it be more cost-effective to carry it from the South African Republic, that is, from Africa?

- Then the representatives of the Department of Energy said that it would be still better for Ukraine to import coal from South Africa. The fact is that the United States mine anthracite coal, but there is not so much it there. Because of this, we imported more coal from South Africa. However, in 2016, and in 2015, we also received coal from the United States. For example, last year nearly 15% of Ukraine's imported coal came from the USA.

- And where else did we import it from?

- From Canada we received just a little bit more than 6% of the total import of coal, about 17% - from Kazakhstan. In addition, we had African, Polish and even Australian coal.
