NATO will not fight with Russia over Ukraine, but NATO countries could provide lethal weapons - Gonchar

NATO will not intervene in a military conflict with Russia defending the interests of Ukraine, but the decision may be adopted to supply lethal weapons to Ukraine. This opinion was aired in exclusive comments to UNN reporter by the president of the Centre for Global Studies "Strategy XXI" Mykhailo Gonchar.

“We can not expect that NATO will in orderly ranks rally to Ukraine defense,” - Gonchar said.

He added that “the past period showed that Western countries preferred to distance themselves from potential conflict with Russia. The biggest proof of this is Syria, where Russia operates openly cynical, brazenly with the use of the Armed Forces. It is worth to recall the barbaric use and in fact the authorization of the use by the satellite Assad regime of chemical weapons in Aleppo. Yet everything that the West dared to do, and it was done by the United States, was a limited missile attack on Russian puppets in Syria; by that, they pre-warned them. And that's all.”

At the same time, according to M.Gonchar, under certain circumstances, you could expect that the issue of supplying lethal weapons to Ukraine will be solved.

“Another thing - and what we can maximum expect under certain circumstances - is that the issue of providing lethal weapons to Ukraine will be adopted. Certain member countries could adopt such decisions (providing lethal weapons to Ukraine — ed.) as in the fourth year of Russian aggression against Ukraine, the fighting in Syria, Russian intervinning in Libyan affairs, the West has developed more or less adequate understanding that this was not some crisis in the Eastern Ukraine, but the Russian aggression. By that, Russia is moving further in Europe acting by means of a hidden war against the European Union from inside the European Union... so Russia must be stopped," - he added.
