The conference "Ukraine in the Global Energy Context and the Initiative of the Nordic Countries on Energy Efficiency and Humanitarian Aid" was held in Budapest

On 29 March, 2018 in Budapest the conference "Ukraine in the Global Energy Context and the Initiative of the Nordic Countries on Energy Efficiency and Humanitarian Aid" was organized jointly by the embassies of Ukraine and Norway in Hungary with the support of Representative Office of PJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine in Eastern Europe. The event was attended by Hungarian energy experts, CEOs of the Hungarian energy companies, journalists and representatives of NGOs, as well as by the diplomatic corps accredited in Hungary. 

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to Hungary Lubov Nepop, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Norway to Hungary Olav Berstad, President of the Center for Global Studies "Strategy XXI" Mykhailo Gonchar, Chairman of the Board of the State Joint Stock Company "Chernomornaftogaz" Svetlana Nezhnova gave the speeches. 

In his speech, M. Gonchar informed about:  Russia's use of energy as weapons in aggression against Ukraine; the hybrid war against the West with an emphasis on the consequences of Russian aggression from an energy point; the steps taken by Ukraine in this context; Gazprom's actions after the adoption of the final decisions by the Stockholm arbitration; Ukrainian position and measures to counteract to the construction of gas pipelines bypassing Ukraine, primarily North Stream 2 and Turkish Stream. 

S.Nezhnova described in detail the situation surrounding the activities of "Chornomornaftogaz" before and after the illegal occupation of Crimea by Russia, as well as the steps taken by Ukraine in the international legal field against Russia in the context of the illegal exploitation of Ukrainian gas deposits on the Black Sea shelf after the illegal occupation of Crimea. The presentation of "Chornomornaftogaz" in Budapest was the first such kind of foreign event since the beginning of Russian aggression against Ukraine.

Norway's Ambassador O. Berstad in his speech presented concrete examples of the Scandinavian Initiative on Energy Efficiency and Humanitarian Aid in the East of Ukraine in the face of continued Russian aggression against Ukraine.

Ambassador L. Nepop, summing up the discussion, stressed that counteracting the construction of gas pipelines bypassing Ukraine, joint modernization and operation of the Ukrainian GTS, the transfer of the points of purchase of Russian gas to the Ukrainian-Russian border should become our joint response to the Russian Federation and contribute to the strengthening of the pan-European energy security.
