Will Slovak gas reverse help to overcome Ukraine the heating season

Slovakia started to test small reverse to Ukraine via Voyany-Uzhgorod pipeline, which on September, 1  is to supply natural gas from the EU to Ukraine. The government and parliament of Ukraine believe that it will help to hold the heating season, provided that all consumers will save gas.

Initially, the gas flow will be 3 billion cubic meters till March 2015. After March, 2015 it will reach 10 billion, said the representative of the Slovak Eustream Wagram Chuhuryan.

Government resolution on population and enterprises gas supply securing till the end of next heating season stipulates that in case of savings in all areas, Ukraine consumption must be reduced to 30.23 billion cubic meters of natural gas from October to April (taking into account that total average annual consumption is 50 bcm per year). Half of this amount is in underground gas storage facilities, part could be extracted from Ukrainian own gas deposits and part could be got by reverse.

In opinion of Michael Gonchar, President of the Centre for Global Studies “Strategy XXI”, small reverse of gas will facilitate the passing of Ukraine through heating season but not resolve fully the problem of gas deficit. Gazprom’s  lobby will try to prevent getting Ukraine reverse gas, including through threats to European operators. According to Mr.Gonchar, if the winter is cold,  gas consumption will increase. But if winter is warm,  heating in large cities will be relatively stable, but in Ukrainian homes will still be colder than last year, experts predict.
