Russia is not sure whether Nord Stream 2 would be completed - expert

In Russia, there is no certainty that the Nord Stream will be completed. Thisis what Mykhailo Gonchar, the president of the Centre for Global Studies "Strategy XXI", told about in an interview with Segodnya.

"The Kremlin doesn't accidentally uncork the champagne because they understand that the situation is very shaky. It fluctuates as a pendulum, to one way or to another. Now everything looks as if everything is in the favor of the Nord Stream-2, since the main agreements have been reached and there is still a little Danish problem, but even if Denmark does not agree, it's still possible to bypass this area... The matter, whether Nord Stream 2 would be completed, depends on American sanctions against companies of potential contractors," he said.

According to the expert, if sanctions are imposed, then this project will not be implemented.

"The chances of imposing sanctions are high, so there was no solemn ceremony of welding the firstpipe, conditionally speaking. Because it's just the contractor companies said last year, ... if sanctions are imposed, they will not take part in this project. Because many of these companies have what to lose in the US market,"- the expert said.

According to him, such gas pipelines are not being built annually.

"If these sanctions are not implemented and they will have a quasi-mode of sanctions that can be bypassed, then it will be delayed, but will be implemented. There is already a delay in the implementation of this project. Therefore, it will not be put into operation by the end of 2019," Mykhailo Gonchar said.

According to the expert, the optimal situation for Europeans, and for Americans, would be to postpone the project for an indefinite time.

"At the same time, everybody will retain a political face in the brutal treatment of Russia," Gonchar said.
