Gonchar: Americans can impose sanctions on Gazprom’s contractors after the Nord Stream – 2 is built

The implementation of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline project largely depends on the position of the United States, - thepresident of the Centre for Global Studies "Strategy XXI" Mykhailo Gonchar said in a comment to the publication"GORDON".

"I hope that the draft resolution adopted by the Verkhovna Rada was set right in the process of revision, since at first it was completely faulty. In general, this is the right position. It is true, it was necessary to address moreprecisely to the European Parliament, the parliaments of the EU member states and NATO. Even if the Nord Stream2 is built, its operation can be stopped. Another optionisthat it will only work for half of the capacity. The same was for a long time with the first stage of the "Nord Stream". Such probability exists. But our appeals will not play a decisive role in this matter. First of all, the US can influence it. I do not exclude that Americans want to let Gazprom spend up on the construction of the Nord Stream- 2, and then to impose sanctions on contractors. But without them, it's unrealistic to start the gas pipeline,Gonchar said.

According to him, Kyiv and Brussels can achieve that transit of Russian gas even in the future will pass through the territory of Ukraine.

"If one third of Russia's gas is exported through our gas transmission system, this will ensure a minimum level of profitability of the Ukrainian GTS. As long as Russian gas passes through Ukraine, Gazprom does not have full control over transit. Therefore, they want to remove us from this process. Ukraine prevents Gazprom's transit monopoly in delivering gas to Europe. And the joint efforts of Kyiv and Brussels can save gas transit through Ukraine, albeit in smaller volumes. In general, we see how Gazprom is supported by Germany and Austria. That is why we need a good American stick to punch the Germans and the Austrians and thus to bring them to mind, Gonchar said.
