The arrest of Gazprom's assets: what they are and what is really valuable

There were no assets of the Russian monopolist in Ukraine. In fact, it is advisable to focus on foreign assets that are truly valuable. This was stated in the comments to "Slovo i Dilo" by the President of the Centre for Global Studies "Strategy XXI" Mykhailo Gonchar, assessing the arrest of Gazprom’s assets in Ukraine, and the intention to seek the seizure of foreign assets of the monopolist.

"The thing is that Gazprom's assets in Ukraine are very small, except for the share in the joint venture Gaztransit, but there is not much in comparison with Gazprom's billionth debt. This is Gazprom's participation in the material assets located on the territory of Ukraine, but to a small extent", Gonchar said.

At one time, when the RosUkrEnergo scheme operated, Gazprom had an asset of Ukrgazenergo, he added.

"This was a joint venture between Naftogaz and RosUkrEnergo, but in an indirect manner that it was essentially Gazprom's asset. There is no "RosUkrEnergo", no "Ukrgazenergo".The only thing that exists is Gaztransit. There was also a company Gazpromzbut Ukraine, but it existed more on paper and did not have serious material assets", the expert explained.

When it comes to arresting Gazprom's assets, the payments that the monopolist should make according to Stockholm arbitration, it means that there is a very large number of Gazprom's assets abroad, he said.

"These assets are in large numbers in the form of various joint subsidiaries, the shareholding of Gazprom. Gazprom has a list of these companies, which is approved annually at the shareholders' meeting. This is a list of affiliated with Gazprom companies, in which it has shares or fully owns them"- the expert said.
