Cyber-nuclear tricks in Ostland

 

On October 16-20, Coherent Resilience-2017 Command-Staff Training on the Protection of Critical Power Infrastructure was held for the first time in Ukraine. The training was organized with the assistance of the NATO Energy Security Centre of Excellence and with the support of the NATO Science for Peace program.

Although the nuclear aspect did not dominate in the plan, it was, however, taken into account in two contexts: probable sabotage against the non-nuclear infrastructure of the nuclear power plants (NPP), and the subsequent campaign of misinformation from some of the neighboring states of Ukraine - Ostland - on nuclear threat to Europe due to a serious accident at a NPP, caused by the use of another manufacturer's fuel. This is from the legend of the training. And now let's take a look at reality - writes in his article for DT.UA  president of the Centre for Global Studies "Strategy XXI" Mykhailo Gonchar.

"With the onset of the winter and additional load on the power system of Ukraine, the threat of a new nuclear disaster in central Europe becomes not only a theoretical danger. Analysts of Energy Research & Social Science (ERSS) said that by 2020 there would be a 80 percent chance of a "serious accident" on one of Ukraine's nuclear power plants, and called for preparation for a new Chernobyl " - this is a Russian media message from October 17, referring to the conclusion of reputable foreign scholars, seems to be a completely standard propaganda portion that periodically influences Ukraine and Europe from Moscow.

However, some aspects of information retransmitted by the Russian media should be analyzed very carefully.

Nothing is new

If you read the Russian media texts devoted to energy issues starting from 2013, it is easy to conclude that the various horror stories were not in deficit before.Usually most of them concerned the gas sphere, and the main content was reduced to the fact that Ukrainians would freeze without Russian gas, "Kievan junta" would break its transit to Europe, "Right-Sectorians" would blast gas pipelines, and so on. More sophisticated propaganda was based on the unchanging "postulate" of the obsolete gas transportation system (GTS) of Ukraine and, consequently, the need for the European Union to agree to new projects of Gazprom - Nord Stream 2 and the second branch of the Turkish Stream.

There were also nuclear horror stories. For example, on May 31, 2014 - at the height of the diffuse invasion of the Russian Federation on the Donbass - the article appears under the very eloquent title "Ukrainian NPPs: in anticipation of the new Chernobyl?" It depicts an attempt by militants of the Right Sector to "capture" the Zaporizhzhya NPP, which is located in the region bordering with the war-bent region: "The NPP is attacked by a group of nationalist-minded militants trying to enter its territory and seize it. However, the security of the station shot at the defeat, and allegedly 13 attackers were killed and then thrown outside the nuclear power plant".

Note that this is not a legend for exercises - named concrete and the most powerful NPP of Ukraine and Europe!

But media used not only horror stories.
